Van Hughes formed the “whippersnapper country band” The Noodles in 1996 opening for Brad Paisley, Yankee Grey, LeAnn Womack, The Wilkinsons, Ricochet, and others in Hampton Roads, VA. Artist/producer Tyler Cain played lead guitar. In 1998-1999, The Noodles won the “Band of the Year Award” twice from the Virginia Country Music Association, and Van won the “Horizon Award” in 1998.
Van played bass guitar with the Brooklyn synth-pop band Teen Commandments (2011-2018). During that time, they wrote the musical Burn All Night with Andy Mientus which premiered at ART in Cambridge, MA in 2017.
Van wrote, composed, and starred in the Off-Broadway musical Space Dogs with Nick Blaemire which premiered at MCC Theatre (NYC) in 2022. He also produced the cast album available on the Warner Chapel music label. A live video capture of Space Dogs is available on BroadwayHD.
